Ice – Food for thought!
Ice plays a big part in Alberta winters; it’s part of fishing, snowmobiling and in some areas as a means of transportation. Whether it be for recreational purposes or the transport of goods, ice is a serious safety concern.
Cautionary measures should be taken before undertaking any kind of activity on an icy surface to ensure you make it safely across. Take into consideration what body of water you’re about to cross, is it a river, marsh, lake, muskeg or stream? Each of these will have different types of ice; some safer than others. Has the weather been warm as of late? Warmer weather will soften the icy surface which could lead to shifting and cracking.
